RELEASE: adidas & RGIII Celebrate Veteran’s Day with Signature Cleat

adidas RGIII Signature Cleat Gift Box_1

Courtesy of adidas America:

MINNEAPOLIS – Nov. 7, 2013 – Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III plans to honor the men and women of the U.S. military by wearing his first adidas signature football cleat in a camouflage colorway during Thursday Night Football.

Griffin will further demonstrate his appreciation for military personnel by partnering with adidas to benefit the Operation Renewed Hope Foundation (ORHF), a Veteran-led organization that provides quality housing and supportive services to America’s homeless Veterans.

Griffin III’s connection with the military is deep-rooted.  He is the proud son of Robert Griffin, Jr. and Jacqueline Griffin, both of whom served as sergeants in the United States Army.  Griffin III was born at Camp Lester Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan and subsequently lived on various military bases, eventually settling at Fort Hood near Copperas Cove, TX.  The military values of discipline and hard work instilled in him by his parents remain with him today.

“Everyone who knows my history knows that I’m a military kid,” said Griffin III.  “My parents put in a combined 34 years of service.  To have a cleat that represents not only the military, but what my parents gave me and my sisters, is truly an honor.”

The special Veteran’s Day colorway of RGIII’s signature adidas cleat celebrates all who served and currently serve in the military.  The cleat exterior and stripes are green and gold, signifying the formal dress greens worn by the US Army.  The modern digital Camouflage is inspired by the early 1990’s green pattern worn by Griffin III’s parents and the bright pop color featured on the cleat interior, sock liner and laces mirrors the poppy flower that serves as a Veteran’s Day remembrance.  The cleat’s heel tab is emblazoned with Griffin III’s signature phrase “Know Your Why.”

To commemorate Veteran’s Day on November 11, adidas will release a limited number of special Veteran’s Day gift boxes, featuring a signed pair of the RGIII cleats in the special colorway with a matching flat brim hat, graphic tee shirt and Team Speed socks.  With 100 percent of the profits being donated to ORHF, each gift box will be sold for $1,111 on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtags #BUY #TheRGIII together via Chirpify.

“Robert Griffin III is one of the most authentic athletes in all of sports and is a role model on and off the field,” said David Baxter, VP of Sport Performance for adidas America.  “Creating a signature cleat for Robert solidifies him as a sports icon side by side with the likes of Derrick Rose and Lionel Messi.”

Griffin III joins adidas icons Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls and Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona in having his own signature footwear.

“It’s every kid’s dream when they are watching superstars on TV, to one day have your own shoe,” said Griffin III.  “In my second year as a pro, it is a dream-come-true to have my own signature cleat and being able to honor the men and women who serve this great country with this shoe makes it that much more special.”

Griffin III’s signature cleat was designed and built to the quarterback’s specifications to enhance his unique style of play and his ability to fuse performance and style.  A lightweight 5/8 speed-mid cut provides support without extra bulkiness and weight while a full length internal adidas TECHFIT liner wraps the foot with a sock-like fit, locking it in place over the top of the plate for quick changes of direction.  The engineered lightweight upper featuring QUICKWEB technology provides zoned, lightweight support and the QUICKFRAME plate gives Griffin III the traction to stop on a dime and make quick changes of direction.

The RGIII signature football cleat will be available in stores April 1 but stay tuned to www.adidas.com/football, adidas Football’s Facebook page and on Twitter via @adidasUS  #THERGIII  #teamadidas  for information on additional early launches.

FEATURE: Oregon Ducks Debut Breast Cancer Awareness Unis

by Sandy Dover for Sneaker Report

Cancer has affected everyone, including athletes of all backgrounds. Though the cause to study, prevent, and cure cancer is everpresent in our world, it’s sometime easy to forget just what it means to tackle the disease as a cause when it’s become a mundane message. The University of Oregon football team has decided to make that message of fighting cancer a little brighter – by making themselves brighter in the process.

Sporting new Nike Vapor Talon Elite cleats, Vapor Carbon Elite socks, and Vapor Jet gloves, the Oregon Ducks football team have decorated themselves in bright pink to honor women’s cancer victims and are to auction off the helmets and other game day attire for charity, principally for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. …

FEATURE: Under Armour’s Alter Ego Gloves ‘Highlight’ Superstar Superheroes

As featured by Yahoo!

Clearly, Under Armour is having fun and letting everyone else get in on the fun too. After all, when can anyone say that they can own Bat gloves with wings on the wrist, or Spidey’s famous webbed gloves, or even psyche opponents out on the field for Kryptonite versions of the Superman emblem? How cool is that?

I can’t speak for the actual receiving performance of the gloves, but aesthetically, they are second to none. I love the idea of being able to flash the Bat-signal or Kal-El’s family crest to people just with an adopted Jay Z gesture. Even better, the gloves can be wore as costume enhancers, particularly for the gloved heroes like The Caped Crusader, Cap, and Spidey, where often such costumes are made and broken in the details. …

Feature: Cam Newton and Under Armour Got It Right

by Sandy Dover for The Shadow League

One of the most physically-imposing players that the National Football League has ever seen, especially at the quarterback position, the Carolina Panthers star has lit up the NFL with his star play, smile, and style (though to be fair, this year has been a struggle.) Now, he’s extending away from the gridiron. …

In all truth, the Cam Highlight Trainer is one of a kind as a performer.

Feature: TSL 5-on-5 – Black Protectionism In Sports

featuring Sandy Dover for The Shadow League

African Americans have long practiced individual opinion, but context means everything. Terrell Owens is a jerk and a bad teammate, and ALL people give it to him. Michael Vick and Cam Newton are great talents with so-so teammates, but THEY become pariahs by comparison to others who have worse fortune. That’s why many African American fans unify. It’s a matter of context. The sports realm is littered with fear and prejudice.
